Innovative and Sustainable Building Materials and Construction Technology – Mud and Bamboo

Abstract

Sustainable development is a core to advancement in science and technology and key to the stability of any country with respect to environmental technology. And for success to be achieved in this area, innovation especially in the area of building materials and construction technology are not negotiable. Over the years, especially in recent times, the costs of building construction materials are not within the reach of the people especially low income earners. So the philosophy of this research revolves around the manipulation of traditional and local building materials and simple but functional construction technology for sustainable development, with special attention to mud and bamboo technology. Furthermore, the research also examines the role of government and professional bodies in providing the needed direction in order to harness both traditional and local materials and the concept of simple technology of production of building components from such materials – bamboo, palm fibres, and mud. This research has examined and met this challenge positively because the concept of the provision of adequate housing be it qualitative or quantitative shelter for people centers on affordable and functional building materials and construction technology. The research has also examined among other things mud or laterite, bamboo, and palm fibre etc., as a single entity and composite entity as a building component.
