The Individuation of the House Built en Masse Towards the Representation of Self: The Case of Middle-class Housing in the City of Mexicali, Mexico

Abstract

In present-day Mexican society, the acquisition of mass-produced housing for habitation is facilitated and therefore encouraged by means that can be understood as an imposition by power, thus creating a business that defines culture in architecture through the market of building imposed models. Through an ethnographic study of the metamorphosis in the architecture of mass dwellings, it is understood that the inhabitant desires to express their self, differentiate and expose themselves to society as a different entity. The results show that the changes are not only given by the desire to express themselves, but also by a state of conformity which forces their need for individual expression.
