The Timeless Interior Space of Popular Porfirian Housing. Merida, Mexico 1880-1911 : Inprint of a Cultural Past

Abstract

Although in Mexico there have been many works on the architecture and urbanism of “porfirismo” (1876-1910), very little has been studied on popular housing, even though the construction of a lot of these, was important in the consolidation of some Mexican cities. Therefore, this work contributes to the regional historiography, but mainly aims to analyze the architectural object with a novel methodological approach. The main objective of this work is to analyze the space and functioning of the popular housing of the turn of the century (XIX-XX), in one of the most important cities of the time (Mérida), starting from the assumption that this house, it was conditioned both by legislation and by a strong cultural imprint. So strong was the latter, that even, to this day, just over a hundred years later, it still prevails. More than 200 housing archives were worked on, with online architectural reconstructions and various use analyzes, considering typological, temporal (day/night) and gender variables, to name a few.
