The Political Economy of Electronic Sports

Abstract

Using elite interviews with gaming and sports industry insiders, this project is centered around building up an academic knowledge base to help understand the incipient global phenomenon of electronic sports (or esports). My research includes interviews from Chinese, Indian, and U.S. esports actors. Sectors include publishers and developers, esport organizations, tournament organizers, streamers, and players. The primary objective is to develop a view of the hierarchy and power dynamics between the major sectors of esports.
