Ethical Imperative – Humanising Enterprise Resource Planning for Human Dignity

Abstract

Studies have proved that there are strong relationships between organisational performance and human resource management. The enterprise management systems otherwise known as ERP (Enterprise resource planning) systems are at the heart of allocating resources and it facilitates rational resource allocation as per its availability and accessibility for the organisation. Since introduction till current, ERP has evolved much to manage the entire operations of the organisations. Human resource is the most important part of the enterprise management systems. It has also been found that the scarcest resource is the perfect human employee. The question is – whether human beings can be considered as “resource” and if they are then are there any conditions that would discern them from the other “resources” as in raw materials, machines, electricity etc. The ethical question arises when we remember that the value of a human being is understood to be intrinsic. If so, then by being considered a “resource” are we thereby contributing to degrading human dignity and thus reducing its value? This study is an exploration to understand whether ERP is ethical for the apt distribution of human competencies and how the view on it contributes to the organisation.
