Preserving Philippine Heritage: Teaching Youth through Video Games

Abstract

The Filipino identity is defined by heritage, and is a pillar to the Filipino community, and as a part of these communities, heritage has to be protected, and maintained. Today, aspects of Philippine heritage are explored such as literature, how it has been passed down from generations by ancient Filipino tribes even some surviving until today like “Biag ni Lam-ang’” or “Life of Lam-ang” in English. In this paper, heritage preservation is tackled in a modern perspective as it has evolved; in the form of digitalization. The implication of technology not only preserving heritage and culture, but also conveying them in a way that can be easy to process and understand thus it can be the tool to incorporate games and education. To pursue the study, the scholars chose to interview the faculty and students of an institution using focus group discussion and analyze data by thematization. The researchers have then observed the influences of games in education from the interests of students. As a result of the gathered information, the scholars create a 2D platformer game portraying the story of “Biag ni Lam-ang”. Regarding the results gathered, the scholars infer that: with the proper visualization, this can be an effective approach for teaching culture and heritage. We conclude that extending the importance of heritage preservation can be achieved in different platforms, such as video games.
