Sustainable Transformation: A Comprehensive Study on Environmental Performance Through LEED Certification, Energy Simulations, and Post-Occupancy Evaluation

Abstract

Al-Hussein Technical University’s old building is considered in this study for an environmental assessment. For advanced monitoring in diverse parameters, an integrated approach of energy simulations was performed on the building using Revit software, along with a Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) that was employed following the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification framework to collect performance data. This study compares the compliance of the university’s old building with LEED certificate standards according to its various aspects, such as, site selection, energy efficiency, water conservation, material use and Indoor Environmental Quality. By integrating POE methodology with LEED certification, along with the use of a Revit-based energy model, it provides a focused analysis that provides both quantitative and qualitative data for the assessment, this approach offers a strenuous methodology for sustainable evaluation of the building’s current environmental performance and explores strategies for potential improvements. The evaluation highlights the building’s adaptation from a military facility to a university, showcasing innovative and sustainable practices. In addition to that, the paper includes results of the building’s current performance and its estimated performance based on strategic well-planned sustainable approaches and how they contribute to a conscious built environment resulting in fostering sustainability. This includes addressing regional priorities, enhancing water-saving fixtures, and conducting energy audits for sustained environmental performance enhancement.
