The Sustainable Development of Miaos Pattern Arts Under the Context of Digitalization

Abstract

This research delves into the intricate and culturally significant Miao pattern art, prevalent among the ancient Miao ethnic group in China and Southeast Asian regions. These patterns serve as artistic expressions and repositories of the Miao people’s history, religious beliefs, and reverence for nature. However, in today’s rapidly evolving society, Miao pattern art faces the challenge of modernization, particularly in terms of passing it down to younger generations. The study employs a co-design approach, involving the Miao community in exploring new possibilities for the digital-age development of pattern art. It investigates the current applications of Miao pattern art, the challenges associated with digitization, and how co-design can facilitate the preservation of this cultural heritage. Through one-on-one interviews and co-design workshops, the study gains valuable insights and develops strategies for the sustainable development of Miao pattern art. The findings highlight the Miao community’s technological and communication challenges while showcasing their strong desire to preserve and evolve their cultural art. In conclusion, this research underscores the importance of designer involvement in preserving and advancing the rich cultural heritage of the Miao people. It not only contributes to regional cultural development but also offers a valuable model for preserving and transforming traditional art forms in the digital age. The study emphasizes the need for community engagement in the design process to ensure the continuous relevance and evolution of cultural heritage.
