Abstract
Urbanization is the key factor behind the development of any city. Better infrastructure facilities and employment opportunities attract rural population to urban areas which causes pressure on its existing land resources. Rapid urbanization causes loss of green areas and other agricultural lands. It is very important to create a balance between urban growth and the protection of green open space of the city. These growing urban populations create haphazard and unplanned outward urban growth of the city. It is the biggest challenge for urban planners to create balance between urban growth and the protection of its green open space for the sustainable development. The balance among social, economic, and environmental development in the city ensures sustainable development in the city. There are few useful urban growth models which can be used to predict the potential urban growth areas and analyze the loss in other green open space of the city. In this study futuristic potential urban growth areas will be predicted for selected tier 2 city (Bhopal) of India by using a suitable CA (Cellular Automata)- based model. Different LULC maps and other important data are used for the prediction of urban growth and its area analysis. The identification of expansion growth pattern will be helpful in effective planning of infrastructure in urban areas and also in the preparation of a development plan.
