Assessment of Economic and Social Impact of Intangible Cultural Heritage: The Case of Durga Puja in Kolkata

Abstract

Cultural heritage now extends beyond monuments to include living traditions, promoting cross-cultural communication, respect for diverse practices, and supporting social cohesion with socioeconomic significance. Durga Puja, part of Eastern India’s 10-day mother goddess worship in Sep-Oct, is uniquely grand in Kolkata. Durga Puja in Kolkata has been inscribed on the Intangible cultural Heritage list of UNESCO in the category of ICH of Humanity. The city transforms with dazzling lights, and artistic pavilions, and becomes ‘The City of Joy,’ enchanting countless visitors daily. Within Kolkata city, almost 2500 pujas are organized by different agencies like local clubs and neighbourhood associations. This paper assesses the far-reaching social and economic impacts of this annual phenomenon. Our objectives encompass the identification of social aspects associated with the Durga Puja. We delve into the intricate economic benefits for different stakeholders brought on by this cultural extravaganza in order to quantify its economic repercussions. In totality. In addition to large-scale stakeholder interviews across different organising committees of Durga Puja, Spatial analysis is also carried out to understand the spatial pattern associated with Durga Puja. We conclude by proposing a comprehensive framework for the assessment of social and cultural impacts of Intangible Cultural Heritage since Sustainable cities need integrated policymaking that builds on culture. This exploration underscores the significance of Durga Puja upholding sustainable cultural practices for creating economic and social cohesion.
