Abstract
This proposal explores “heterotopia” as a lens to describe the role of culture-driven ecological realities in unfolding sustainability innovation in European peripheries. It highlights “real utopian spaces” creators shaping cultural environments as infrastructures of imagination, and crafting creative pathways for civic engagement in sustainability concerns. Drawing on the “Tandem Regions” two years intercultural cooperation program’s impact evaluation across Portugal, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria, the study reveals initiatives and participatory approaches for Sustainability Innovation. These efforts bridge culture, civil society, and the environment, advancing a just transition through tangible actions for urban regeneration. The study offers a framework aligning culture with SDGs2030, exemplified by: 1.Aveiro region PORTUGAL: “Uncovering Hidden Gems,” mapping « off the radar” cultural communities for sustainability. 2. Rural BULGARIA: “Baba Residence Goes Climartistique,” merging art and climate action. 3. Post-industrial polluted sites ITALY: “(Re)center Peripheries,” fostering creative economy hubs. 4. GREECE Elementary schools: “Empowering Tomorrow’s Citizens,” revolutionizing creative education. 5. Fryslân’s “Mienskip” engagement approach, symbolized by the “marching bosk,” and community-driven sustainability. In conclusion, this study addresses key questions, framing planetary existence in ecological realities, responding to pressing local demands and mobilizing local communities being conscious of near and dear concerns and the need for collective immagination infrastructures. It emphasizes culture’s role in shaping innovative pathways for sustainability across peripheral lands.
