From Changing Engineering Course to Changing the Course of Engineering: Engineering for One Planet's Efforts to Infuse Sustainability across Engineering Education

Abstract

Launched in 2020, the Engineering for One Planet (EOP) initiative envisions a future when sustainability is a core tenet of the engineering profession. To do this requires broader and deeper integration of sustainability skills and related professional skills across all engineering disciplines. Catalyzed by The Lemelson Foundation and its partner VentureWell in the United States, Engineering for One Planet has worked with a global community of students, faculty, academic leaders, and professionals from industry, nonprofit, philanthropic sectors to transform engineering education. EOP is a platform for change, providing free resources and support for faculty and institutions seeking to infuse sustainability into diverse engineering courses and programs. The EOP Framework offers a complete set of student learning outcomes – including both fundamental sustainability and critical professional and leadership skills – aligned to international accreditation requirements and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The EOP Framework was co-developed with input from hundreds of academic, business and nonprofit experts from diverse backgrounds and is available for free along with companion teaching guides. The EOP initiative has facilitated curricular changes in hundreds of classes impacting thousands of students.
