Optimization of a Gas Scrubber for Water-tube Boilers in the Sugar Industry: Element of Particulate Matter Capture

Abstract

There is a need to reduce pollutant emissions into the atmosphere of the water-tube boilers of the Compañía Azucarera Valdez S.A. Entity that is located practically within the City of Milagro. It does not comply with the Air Emission Standards of fixed combustion sources, which mentions that the amount of particulates for equipment installed before 2003 have a maximum limit of 300 mg / m3. A mist eliminator was designed to work with the wet gas scrubber of cauldron #10, which uses bagasse as fuels, for the generation of steam for industrial use. The research is documentary and field based. The methodology used was mixed, focusing on comparing three types of technologies to meet the desired objectives: fog eliminators types: Demister, Cyclone and, Chevron. In order to find the right complement, a comparison sheet was made, which is a table of contents evaluated quantitatively to analyze if the indicators formulated for each of the contents are adapted to the project, allowing the obtaining of adequate results taking into account the time, place and needs of the research, contribution to the solution of the problem. The methodology of Decision Analysis with Multiple Criteria (MADCM) is taken, whose selection was the Chevron type fog eliminator, with the best capture efficiency. The following softwares were used: AutoCAD and SolidWorks, which allowed to visualize in 3D, the structural design in the gas scrubber of the cauldron.
