Knowledge Exchange between Knowledge Institutions and Societal Stakeholders on Sustainability: How Can Learning Communities Facilitate Sustainable Knowledge Exchange, Co-design, and Co-production?

Abstract

Knowledge institutions and their students hold many skills and much knowledge. However, this remains merely within the knowledge institutions and is not much shared and employed in society. The purpose of the present project is to accelerate the solution of social challenges facing cities by involving researchers, teachers and students on a large scale. This is considered as a form of knowledge utilization on the one hand and on the other as offering the city as a learning environment for students. In a participatory action research design the formulation, operationalization an implementation of a long-term sustainable knowledge exchange between societal stakeholders and knowledge institutions on the theme of sustainability within Amsterdam NIeuw-West, functions as a case study to identify the key physical, social and digital components for knowledge infrastructures. The methodological approach employed is the ‘reflexive monitoring in action’ system. It consists of four core components: observation, analysis and reportage, reflection, and adjustment of activities. Data is gathered through expert and semi-structured interviews, focus groups and education evaluations. By concretizing a knowledge infrastructure in co-creation with all partners, mapping needs, evaluating the process and identifying barriers and facilitators, we aim to contribute to arriving at a robust knowledge infrastructure on sustainability in Amsterdam Nieuw-West that can stand on its own after the trial of two years in 2022.
