An Ecofeminist Analysis of Animals Oppression in Selected Post-Colonial Fiction : Born Free Sold Out

Abstract

In my research, I set out to explore the commodification and marginalization of the non-human populations specifically animals as depicted in the third world postcolonial fiction. Being a postcolonial citizen myself, I attempt to discover how postcolonial fiction delineates the subjugation of animals in the predominantly anthropocentric postcolonial societies. The basic premise of my study is that, underdevelopment, economic, political, and social crises largely define the contours of the Global South, due to which the non-human populations such as animals are largely subjected to coercion and commodification. I ground my work broadly in vegetarian/ecofeminist critical perspectives discussed by Carol Adams, Vandana Shiva, and Judith Butler.
