Using the Theory of Planned Behavior to Explain Higher Education Students' Pro-environmental Behavior

Abstract

The main aim of this research is to contribute to increasing knowledge on individuals’ environmental behavior. Through the conceptual extension and the empirical application of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), the present study proposes to identify, analyse, and understand the main determinants of the environmental behavior of an important population sample: higher education students. To this end, a survey was conducted online, between March 1 and May 1 of the current year 2020, among the students of Coimbra Business School│ISCAC, a public higher education school in Portugal. The data were analyzed through structural equation modeling (SEM) technique, using the covariance-based SEM approach. The structural model considered attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control and knowledge as exogenous latent variables, and intention and behavior as endogenous latent variables. The direct paths in the model linked the four exogenous variables to intention, and perceived behavioral control and intention to behavior. The results showed that, for the students, the attitudes and knowledge have no significant impact on intention but subjective norm and perceived behavioral control have a positive impact on intention. In addition, perceived behavioral control and intention have a strong and positive impact on behavior.
