Aspects of Applications of Renewable Energy in Gaza Strip

Abstract

As the population in Gaza Strip increases (population growth rate 2.7 % year), the consumption of water and energy will increase; leading to significant rise in unacceptable levels of air pollution, and the defect in water supply and energy sources will increase; leading to severe economic crisis that will result in a significant rise in the probability of an outbreak of warfare. The fact, that Gaza Strip is dependent poor on fossil fuel, has no gas or oil fields, therefore, the energy supply received from Israel and Egypt and as already mentioned is very is highly affected by the political events. Therefore the using of the renewable energy sources offers the best chance for this region to solve problems with deficit energy supplying. In addition, the renewable energy resources could provide many immediate environmental and economic benefits for the people in Gaza. This can be done with existing technologies, human labor, available technology, and existing financial resources. This paper presents a concept that includes the additional use of renewable energy sources to ensure an integrated and sustainable energy supply for the Gaza Strip. In addition, the energy consumption, in particular to the electricity consumption in the Gaza Strip has been pointed out. Moreover, the state of the art for applications and development related to renewable energies, especially solar energy is presented. The obstacles in this regard are also discussed in more detail and energy efficiency in building planning in Gaza is briefly outlined.
