Assessing the Environmental Impacts of Events and Formulating Measures to Mitigate the Impact : On a Path of Sustainable Event Management

Abstract

“Humans are the most altruistically and culturally evolved species on Earth.” The need for events prompts the development of such social and cultural interactions beyond our family structures. Events are a cardinal feature of our Indian culture. Believing in global participation, India hosts a variety of events throughout the year which is attended by a large number of people from around the globe. Even though events attract thousands of people, which directly or indirectly contribute to the local economy and are good platforms for social engagement and business development, these activities and exhibitions generate thousands of tons of waste, use exorbitant quantities of energy, harm to overuse land and lead to growing CO2 emissions. The increase in CO2 emissions leads to global warming which is one of the most critical and challenging problems facing our society. Thus, Events are inherently a paradigm of a harmonious balance between human activity, resource use, and environmental impact, rather than hedonistic, resource-depleting, and waste generation. Trying to devise the best route towards sustainability in the hugely complex journey towards delivering a sustainably produced event can be sometimes remarkable. The first part of this research concentrates on the quantitative approach - measuring the impact and accounting the carbon footprint of events. The second part introduces the guiding plans and suggestions to enhance the sustainability events.
