Designing in the Age of the Symbiocene

Abstract

The notion of design as a way to create meaning is incrusted within the ethical framework of being nature. Nature is creative and adaptable. Over the last four decades, the philosophies such as ‘designing with nature’, ‘ecological design’ and ‘sustainable living’ seek to guide us to generate responsibility beyond the way we project for the human. Nowadays climate change responses and activism are starting to transform the design academy by implementing courses and initiatives that manifest nature at the core. The truth that nature reveals itself is the prime knowledge to inform how to design. Initiatives like biophilic cities (Beatley, 2014), regenerative cultures (Whal, 2016) or biomimetic materialities (Blok, 2016) represent actual efforts of how to respond to the patterns of life in the symbiocene epoch (Albrecht 2016). This workshop will explore the definition of Symbiotic Design. Three different didactic exercises based on critical thinking will help participants to deconstruct, frame, and redefine this term. The analysis of the material produced is aimed to provide an integrated set of arguments and keywords that will conform and validate reciprocal efforts to design symbiotically with the living world.
