Sustainable Development Approach in Planning Urban Parks

Abstract

As an essential part of planning urban spaces, urban parks planning plays a vital role in the sustainability of the urban environment, and studying its various affecting aspects is one of the critical components of moving towards a sustainable form of urban development. In the urban green space planning process, it is also essential to understand the related quantitative, qualitative, temporal, and spatial factors. The purpose of this research is to utilize the ideas and principles of sustainable park planning and provide a set of criteria for planning urban parks with a sustainable development approach. Along with focusing on sustainability components, this study concentrates on three essential dimensions, the social, environmental, and functional aspects of parks. In this study, three quantitative and qualitative methods were used, including the TOPSIS method for data analysis of the questionnaire; the SWOT method for presenting strategies in three dimensions of social, environmental, and functional; and finally QSPM method for prioritizing strategies in park planning with sustainable development approach. The results of this study show that the hierarchical design of parks leads to the structural diversity of these types of spaces, which is useful in the accessibility and promotion of social performance and meeting the needs of a broader range of users. In the sustainable planning of urban parks, the scope of the plan should be considered concerning the surrounding areas, taking into account all physical, environmental, and social aspects.
