Energy Efficient Passive Techniques in Traditional Indian Architecture: Passive Strategies from Early Civilisations to Contemporary Houses

Abstract

The traditional ecologically sensitive – energy conscious Indian way of living and the built forms that evolved out of its timeless Vedic philosophies, were aligned and appropriate to the very essence of life based on knowledge, wisdom, and the interactions between nature and humans. The architecture formations thus based on manifestations from nature and life’s learning’s have left an indelible mark on how we perceive, think, and design traditionally. This traditional architectural heritage reached its helm wherein the sound principles of Indian spiritual and moral value system translated into an honest approach towards creating profane structures and redefining world architecture. In this study, we consider the tipping point, which has come today when the ever growing concerns of costs and preserving our finite resources put into the buildings and structures forces us to take a moment, pause, and look back at the ancient passive ways, since modern buildings today exemplify thermal discomfort and have to be mechanically driven to provide these comfort conditions.
