Contradictions of Economic Development in Relation to Social and Environmental Sustainability in Southwest Bahia: The Caetité Case.

Abstract

Large enterprises installed from 1998 to 2018 in the city of Caetité - Bahia created economic and social expectations. The beneficiation plant (Nuclear Industries of Brazil - “INB”): the extraction of iron ore (Empresa Bahia Mineração) and the wind complex (Renova Energia) moved the local economy and attracted workers from various regions of the country. This paper analyzes the socioeconomic and socioenvironmental impact through the Significance Assessment Matrix. The results identify relevant contradictions between economic size and social and environmental reality. The study reveals that the negative impacts of the implementation of large enterprises in the Caetité region are greater than the positive impacts.
