Enhancing a Sustainable Future for the Youth: From Empathy to Action

Abstract

This study makes an appraisal of the global condition of the environment, “the extent and effectiveness of existing policy responses in addressing major environmental challenges and the prospects or outlook for the environment over the foreseeable future.” The study identifies key issues of the global environment assessment, synthesizes the issues, and adapts them for a youth audience. The study is based on a survey instrument consisting of semi-open-ended questions aimed at finding out how young people between the ages of 18-25 years across the world, within the context of the environment, want their desired future to be; how they expect the future will look like; and whether they are willing to contribute to achieving this future. First, the study informs youth about the drivers of environmental change and the current state of the environment, and explores future pathways to achieve a healthy planet for future generations. Second, it connects younger generations across the world to raise their voice and deeply empowers them to participate in the decision-making processes in their communities.
