Good Governance and Environmental Management in Oil Producing Communities in Nigeria

Abstract

The paper examines the environmental management in oil producing communities in Nigeria. How good governance creates the harmonious environment necessary for the stakeholders to participate in a mutual relationship devoid of conflict is the focus of this paper. This study used data from the secondary sources including text books, periodicals, journals, newspapers, magazines, documents, conference proceedings, and information from reliable internet websites, amongst others. The concept of ‘stakeholders’ collaboration’ provides the guide for this paper. The level of environmental degradation in the oil producing communities in Nigeria provides a very clear road map on how successive governments in Nigeria handles the issues concerning the environment of these communities that produce the bulk of the country’s foreign exchange. The quality of governance over the years has been identified as the major culprit for most crises that characterise the management of the environments in these communities. The paper recommends that the best ways of managing environment in these oil producing communities should be through the provision of platforms that would accommodate the various stakeholders. The stakeholders’ collaboration in the management of the environment of these communities would only be possible when there is good governance in the country. This paper is to stimulate further investigation in establishing the nexus between good governance and environmental management in oil producing communities in Nigeria, through the creation of a harmonious environment for stakeholders’ collaboration in the areas of policies that would protect the interest of all the parties.
