Ecological Footprint: A Comparative Study between Brazil and the United States

Abstract

The sustainability of the planet is one of the most worrying factors in actuality, the negative impacts that people have on nature in the course of years of consequences of altering the ecosystem and diminishing its biocapacity. This work aims to measure the sustainability index in a comparative way, between two regions, comparing a developed country and a developing country, where the needs for natural resources such as land, biodiversity, water and air, as well as their respective biocapacities are presented in different ways. The different habits between these two countries, make the use of resources at different scales. Supply and consumption in developed countries are quite high, but the recycling rate tends to keep pace with the country’s level of development. To achieve this goal, a study was conducted in Brazil and the United States. After analyzing the results, evidence that changes in habits that the population could adopt in order to improve the ecological footprint are discussed.
