(Re)Connect the Nexus: Young Brazilians' Experiences of and Learning about Food-water-energy

Abstract

The relationship among water resources, energy, and food - the water-energy-food nexus - has been intensely studied by the scientific community. This area of research is justified by the fact that these resources are fundamental to sustainable development, and subject to the same kind of pressures. The interdependence between the sectors responsible for producing these resources leads to the complexity of the nexus. It is imperative to understand the perceptions, experience and learning of the end users of these resources about their nexus, in order to address crucial issues, as equal access to each of them, the resilience to pressures on resources and the role of education in approaching the needs and aspirations across communities. In various global contexts young people are key in terms of access to resources, economic productivity, social cohesion and community life. In Brazil, children and young people (aged 10 to 24 years) are a demographic and socially important group, representing 42% of the population. They are the main target audience of educational programs, especially of education for sustainability. Nevertheless, there is little research on the role and perception of young people about the water-energy-food nexus. This presentation brings some results of a research project about the knowledge, experience and participation of young people in the water-energy-food nexus in Brazil (https://bv.fapesp.br/pt/auxilios/94325/reconnect-the-nexus-young-brazilians-experiences-of-and-learning-about-food-water-energy/; http://www.foodwaterenergynexus.com/).
