Urgent Transition To Environmental Sustainability: Prioritizing Environment During Post-War Reconstruction Period

Abstract

Since the time of the Great War at the beginning of the twentieth century, armed conflicts have damaged the environment in a massive extent leading to severe ecological degradation. This paper considers the importance of the environment and its sustainable management as a response to the ecological degradation that stems from conflicts is rarely viewed as priority despite being in context of ravaged infrastructure, loss of people’s livelihood, and disrupted institutions. Also, the damaging effect on the environment is evidently observed as people struggle to obtain clean drinking water, food, fuel for energy generation, and subsequent pollution from poor sanitation. The emergence of environmental challenges during periods of conflicts and post-conflicts necessitate, if not urgently demand the establishment of environmental governance with in the primary post-war reconstruction agenda, especially if the affected societies or nations are heavily dependent on natural resources for subsistence and economic development.
