Sustainability is a Complex Duty - Needing a Common Ground Network

Abstract

This paper brings evidence of several contemporary topics between socio-economic theories to engineering systems perspectives applied for a more sustainable industry. The paper reflects on ten presented papers presented globally, aiming to provide a reference source for both independent and interdisciplinary researchers regarding promising mixed methods methodology to tackle research initiatives in the theme of sustainability, and educating interrelated scientific perspectives contributing to a more multi-disciplinary work ethics. Some challenges are discussed, such as the constraints of socio-cultural and academic settings, including the benefits for cooperative research directions. The paper discusses the importance of academic culture influences, and the relevant theories and pedagogy themes that are transmitted to researchers. When addressing the theme of sustainability, research initiatives can be implemented comprehensively while mitigating the broadly perspective of ‘individualism’. The review of papers shows that significant socio-economic, culture, and institutional ethics can exist as ‘progress barriers’ to sustain projects, and also to support initiatives and solutions for causes that aligns with the sustainability themes. By scrutinizing the opportunities and challenges that exists during the different research phases for all ten papers cited, the study offers some new perspectives of presenting “mainstream academic research” and the importance of cautious mixed methods research for solutions addressed to sustainability. Finally, the paper recognizes how interventions outside of academia can be pertinent to address developing solutions and novel methods, which require a more transparent conception between a network of interdisciplinary experts and comprehensive academic efforts.
