Towards a Conceptual Framework on Sustainability Development Work in the Global South

Abstract

This study is about early career, development-oriented workforces in the field of sustainability in the global south. While so much of what is accessible on the notion of early career is predominantly in the global north, there is a dearth of literature on the global south specifically related to issues of sustainability and development as aligned to the United Nations (UN) 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) (Le Blanc, 2015; Nilsson, Griggs, & Visbeck, 2016). Within the context of this study, early career development-oriented workforce consists of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) and Early Career Academics (ECAs) (Guerin, Devitt, & Redmond, 2010; Haider et al., 2018; Hemmings, 2012; McAlpine, Amundsen, & Turner, 2013, 2014; McAlpine & Turner, 2012; Pienaar & Bester, 2008). The overarching question asked is, ‘what is the context and experience of early career, development-oriented workforce involved in sustainability and development issues in the African continent?’ In answering this question, the study presents theoretical and empirical perspectives to articulate a conceptual framework that could be used to engage and research the notion of early career, development-oriented workforces in sustainability in Africa.
