Designing Media to Enhance Learning of Team Tactical Plays: How Carefully Designed Media Can Enhance Team Learning

Abstract

The specific aim of this qualitative study is to explore the use of digital media for tactical and strategy learning in Gaelic sport in Ireland. The use of media (video/animation/audio/graphics) has long been used by GAA coaches and sports scientists to analyze performance, aid technical skill acquisition, and learn team tactics. But poorly designed media can actually impede player learning. Central to the study is Richard Mayers Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning. Mayers Multimedia Learning Theory proposes twelve principles that shape the design and organization of multimedia presentations to improve learning and reduce cognitive load. For example, the Prior Knowledge principle suggests and highlights different learning outcomes for Novice and Non-Novice learners respectively. Little research however is available to support this principle in modified domains (eg sports tactics and strategy). This study uses a blended methodology approach, applying both qualitative and quantitative methods. Firstly, A thorough online and offline search procedure was applied to assess the scope of contemporary digital media coaching assets and tools used by coaches. These were then compared to assess how they perform as learning tools for Strategic and Tactical Plays using stress tests guided by Mayers twelve Multimedia Learning Principles. Secondly, A selection of coaches and players were interviewed in a qualitative study to assess their experience of strategy and tactical coaching practice using digital media tools. It is hoped the resulting data can help inform future coaching pedagogy and help promote best design practices to enhance the learning of tactical and strategic plays.
