The Balancing Act: Navigating Team Dynamics and the Evolution of Self

Abstract

This showcase addresses the emerging issue of mental health, that has come to the forefront of the sporting arena in recent years. There is undoubtedly a direct correlation between athletes’ mental health, team cohesion and performance. The aforementioned is in part linked to personal growth, which influences how an athlete shows up from their first game in year one to the perspective, resiliency and physical abilities that are present in years 5-10. Imagine the evolution that would take place if interventions to assist athletes navigate these transitions were more proactive, rather than reactive. This session presents fundamental strategies for cultivating an environment that is conducive to the development of a well rounded athlete, that is able to effectively air grievances, develop healthy relationships and coping skills. The outcome is the ability to balance being present for the team, while also honoring the authentic version of themselves.
