Islam and Sport: Perceptions and Attitudes of Young Muslims in Italy

Abstract

This research has set itself as the object of study to investigate opinions and attitudes of young Muslims residing in Italy towards sport and sports practice, using both quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (focus group) methodological tools. In particular, we set out to try to understand how belonging to a faith like Islam, which brings with it the observance of religious holidays that include fasting (Ramadan), daily rituals for prayer, the prohibition of certain foods and drinks, respect for adequate clothing, depending on the context in which it is located, impacts and can affect the approach of young people Muslims towards sport and sports practice. A questionnaire consisting of 30 items was created, and administered to 60 Muslims of the Muslim Youth Association. Specifically, four research areas have been defined: “The subject’s relationship with Islam”, “Islamic view of sports practice”, “Individual motivation”, “Limitations”. In addition, three focus groups were held with 40 young Muslims to understand their perception of how sport is practiced in Italy. From the results, it emerges that for young Muslims in Italy practicing sport is fundamental, because it allows them to keep fit and improve their psycho-physical well-being, however, this sporting practice must take place in line with religious prescriptions. When this does not occur, a series of problems arise that can take them away from sport.
