Female Bodybuilding and Physique Athletes and Identities: Insights from Different Parts of the World

Abstract

There had been numerous studies on women bodybuilders and physique athletes on their factors of engagement. Yet it is still needs to be investigated in terms of the narratives in different ethno-social groups; and if the current situations on the division of bodybuilding in different categories provide more diversity in participation and engagement; and how the identities of athletes are manifested. Current studies provide perspectives in few selected countries and we haven’t seen if there is homogeneity or diversity among different nationalities and cultural backgrounds especially in Asia, Americas, and Europe. The primary objective of the study is to narrate the contemporary situation of women bodybuilders and physique athletes in terms of their participation, engagement, and identities both on amateur and professional levels. Using ethnographic methods, the researcher given his “outsider” perspective will provide a more grounded approach in investigating the topic. Through field observation, interviews, and continuous interaction with participants both on personal and social media connections. Data is collected to see if women bodybuilders are really empowered in their current situations and how this shapes their identity. As the study focuses on narratives not only in Europe and Americas but also in Asia, it provides a more encompassing approach. The study aspires to provide a positive perspective and understanding on women bodybuilders and to contribute to knowledge of women in sport and if possible, create more ideal spaces for women athletes and further understanding of the discipline.
