"Skin to Skin": Emotions, Bodies, and Gender in Sports Teams

Abstract

In recent years, the sociology of sport has been devoting greater attention to study the sport context from different perspectives. In this case, we have studied the emotional expressions, bonds, and relationships in sports teams. Specifically, in three disciplines that involve body contact in their practice (soccer, basketball, and rugby). This context has some special features in their coexistence, such as the strict hierarchical systems in their organization or the persistence of traditional femininity and masculinity exaltation and traditional masculinized abilities considered in their practice -strength, speed, agility- (Diez Mintegui, 1996). With all this, we will talk about the “skin to skin”, that explains a special sensitivity of coexistence in these sports teams, based on the body in its capacity as an agent (Casado Aparicio, 1999). In them, the meetings are close, there are idealizations of support and empathy and the forms of relationship are considered especially intense. Understanding this will help us understand sports teams in order to study their connections and coexistence. The main objective of this paper is to offer an approach to these contexts, explaining what we have called “skin to skin” and its impact. This research pursues the following hypothesis: The body contact involved in these sport disciplines makes their emotions intense, building relationships that their agents consider special, above other contexts. The research methodology used has been interviews with coaches and athletes. We demonstrate how these bodily contacts influence the ways of making relationships within sports teams, crossed by gender and power.
