National Survey of Fitness Trends for Mexico in 2021: Navigating the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

For the last 14 years a study has been carried out to determine the trends of physical activities for health and fitness worldwide. For Mexico, this is its second edition. The objective is to know about fitness trends in Mexico for 2021, comparing the results with the Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2021, as well as to analyze the process of adaptation and biosecurity of gyms to the COVID-19 pandemic. This is based on a quantitative, non-experimental, descriptive and comparative longitudinal study method. The study population are fitness instructors based in Mexico, the sample is non-probabilistic (n = 1,077). An adaptation of the Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends was used for data collection. Results reveal the main fitness trend for Mexico in 2021 is exercise for weight loss; nine of the main Mexican trends also appear in the top 20 of the world survey. On the other hand, the main biosecurity measures are defining the maximum capacity of the facilities and regulating the number of simultaneous attendees, reducing the capacity of face-to-face group classes, as well as applying healthy distance. Conclusions indicate a greater concern of the population to prevention can be observed, specifically in relation to body weight and maintenance of physical fitness. The reduction and attention to obesity, hypertension, and diabetes could be one of the main challenges and areas of opportunity for the fitness sector in Mexico in the coming years.
