Abstract
This study analyzes the development of the women’s discus throwing from its first appearance in international competition at the 1928 Olympic Games until 2019. We identify three significant periods for the development of the event: First, the appearance of Soviet Union athletes; second, the development of the East German state program and; third, the fall of the Communist block. Since then, a long steady decline in the event has ensued. Finally, an analysis of recent trends in the event compared to the equivalent event for men is presented.
