Gamifying the Music Curriculum: Teaching Music Theory Rudiments - Clefs and Notes

Abstract

Music theory is an academic subject that students pursue at various levels of their music studies. Music theory appears at all music stages, and its practicality is visible in integration with other performative and academic music courses. An integral component of success in the music classroom is the instructor’s ability to motivate students to find the learning content fascinating and academically appealing. This study emphasizes gamification and digital tools to offer music theory concepts through competitive and interactive learning. This research discusses gamifying the learning process when covering topics related to identifying and notating music notes in treble, bass, alto, and tenor clefs. This study dissects the application of gamified activities through musictheory.net to increase awareness and interest levels in the topics of music notes and clefs for middle and high school students.
