Innovating with Stackable Online Doctoral Programs

Abstract

In this paper, we describe the development and our unique approach by responding to the demand for doctoral credentialing in a “stacked” offering featuring multiple entry pathways and several exit pathways. FHD receives many queries about doctoral programming in health fields. Advances and innovations in many areas drive the need to be at the forefront of the emphasis on “health care” instead of “sick care,” among them: the expanding role of counselling in health, mental health and well-being; practice implications stemming from a wealth of research worldwide; and, the desire of governments to control rising health spending costs through more-effective management. Moving forward, we have significant potential to fill a continuing demand for current and new doctoral programs, given our flexible delivery model, scalability and ability to reach around the globe. Our future programming will meet the anticipated changes in the health education landscape over the next five to seven years. The core of this model is a one-year, fixed-course Doctoral Certificate that all doctoral students would complete prior to stacking on a professional doctorate or PhD. The professional doctorates are built on the Scholar-Practitioner-Advocate-Leader model incorporating intentional transdisciplinarity and case-based learning, culminating with a discipline-specific dissertation by portfolio. A niche PhD in Health Disciplines will be available to selected students with a priori research and an alignment with existing faculty programs of research. This presentation will provide an overview of the background and core elements of FHD’s integrated and stackable suite of doctoral programs.
