The Transformative Power of Digitalization: Emerging Trends, Benefits, and Risks

Abstract

Digitalization is a megatrend, which influences many spheres of modern people’s life. Education is not an exception, although it found to be more conservative and more resistant to changes (Schneckenberg, 2009). Emerging technologies act as a mean of new opportunities in education, which in turn launch systematic transformation. We could expect (and partly already has obtained) bench of the processes “rethinking what is important to learn” and “rethinking the process of learning” (Collins & Halverson, 2009). However, such a transformation seems to remain underestimated and underexplored. Thus, it is timely and important to look at how trends are believed to manifest themselves, how they are connected to the megatrend of digitalization, and what are possible benefits and risks accompanying the digital transformation. We frame our analysis with the perspective of Foresight theory. So, we approach the future as measurable, manageable, alternative and consensus. The investigation focuses on global visions and bottom-up streams that correspond to a big challenge and a weak signal concept (Ballantine et al., 2017; Facer, 2013). Alongside, the report combines several resources of data. We will use interviews with international experts (Organization of Economic Cooperation Development, N=17), the results of the quantification of innovative projects in education (N=1187). At the discussion part of the report, we will either introduce the brainstorming workshop in the current conference or discuss the results of the past brainstorm session (whatever fits better the agenda).
