Online Reality (VR)-based Language Learning: VR as a New Modality and Kinesthetic Learning as a Learning Method

Abstract

Language learning requires exposure to the language in authentic contexts and an opportunity to interact in an immersive environment. As such, online reality (VR), being immersive and interactive, can serve as a new modality with great potential for language learning. Furthermore, VR is engaging and can spark wonder in learners of all ages. However, we do not yet know how much or in what ways VR can support learning a new language. The same is true for kinesthetic learning in VR. Kinesthetic learning is a learning style based on learners’ physical movements such as motions or gestures. VR can offer one of the best environments for such a learning style, but it remains to be seen how effective it is in this setting. This presentation aims to illustrate how both VR as a modality, and kinesthetic learning as a method can improve language learning. We first promote the use of VR for language learning by identifying the unique advantages that VR can bring. Second, we present the learning activities that we have designed using the VR technology. Third, we provide the results of our user testing that show how learners have interacted with the technology, how it has facilitated their use of the target language, and how it may help them learn or practice the target language. We are confident that we can illustrate the benefits of using VR for language learning and provide its pedagogical justification, thus elucidating the potential of VR in our future language education.
