Supporting and Exploring Innovative Mobile Pedagogies

Abstract

The ubiquity and innovative use of smart mobile technologies in society raise expectations about their effective use in education. These technologies are influencing the nature of learning and teaching in and beyond school. However, a key question remains about the extent to which their innovative potential has been realized. This question drove the development and progress of a European Erasmus+ project: Designing and Evaluating Innovative Mobile Pedagogies (DEIMP) (see www.deimpeu.com). DEIMP established partnerships between university-based teacher educators, school teachers, and school leaders in order to design, develop, test and refine innovative pedagogies using mobile technologies. DEIMP sought insights into factors that underpin innovation in mobile pedagogies and how such innovation may be enabled. The project derived principles of innovative mobile pedagogy from a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and a Best/Worst Scaling Study (BWS). The project drew on these principles in its work with teachers to promote innovation with mobile technologies across a variety of countries and a range of school subjects. In the presentation, we introduce the aims of the DEIMP project and detail the principles of innovation derived from the research. We elaborate on the development of a MOOC and a mobile app to assist teachers in implementing and scrutinizing pedagogical innovation with mobile technologies. We highlight their experiences in designing and implementing their own teaching episodes, in which they sought to use mobile technologies in innovative ways. The findings from the research and the impact of DEIMP are discussed.
