Animation as an Instructional and Motivational Tool for Teachers: Why Teach Animation?

Abstract

In this workshop, participants will 1) explore and discuss the educational benefits of using animation as an instructional and motivational tool for teaching and learning, 2) engage in a variety of animation activities to increase their own understanding and ability to use animation as an instructional and motivational tool, and 3) examine animation lessons and resources for developing expert learners. The workshop can be structured as a 45-minute session beginning with a short introduction to the conceptual aspects of animation, key knowledge, and vocabulary and an overview of the educational benefits of teaching animation. Participants will construct knowledge of animation through experiential learning during the workshop. There will be opportunities to create and view animations during the session. Limited iPads will be available on loan during the session and participants can use their own iPad or iPhone with the iMotion app. Some of the lessons will use traditional art media (paper, pencils, and pens.) The session information will be presented visually with audio and is available online with access to lessons and supporting information on the topic, and a downloadable iBook and short video is also available.
