Student Acceptance of Learning Management Systems as New Learning Technology: Selected Distance Learning Centres in Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of various demographic factors such as age, gender, and education levels on student acceptance of new Learning Management Systems (LMS) in selected Open and Distance Education Institutions in Nigeria. Literature was reviewed to properly situate Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theories of Technology Acceptance within the context of the study. Survey research design was used for this study and Regression Analysis was performed. The results demonstrated several relationships between the following variables: Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU); Perceived Usefulness (PU); Attitude Toward using (AT); and Behavioral Intentions to use (BI). For example: Findings showed that students have a positive attitude towards using Learning Management System, because they find the system easy to use and useful for their course work. In addition, attitude influences the Behavioral Intention to use a Learning Management System. Recommendations made include: deployment of User-friendly LMS; putting proper Infrastructure in place; such as back up power supply and robust Internet connectivity; user awareness; and training and retraining on practical use of LMS.
