Digital Hygiene and Responsible Communication in the Age of the Virtual: The Role of Large Language Models

Abstract

Given that our daily communication has not only been affected by socio-political changes, but external events like the COVID-19 pandemic limiting in-person communication and relationships. Additionally, in today’s digital era, formal communication has taken on a new dimension, removing the ‘humanness’ in most interactions. While the basic principles of formal communication remain the same, there are new considerations that come into play when communicating formally in a virtual context, the most crucial being the promotion of digital hygiene and responsible online interactions. The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and large language models (LLMs), the world is beginning to experience changes in the broader communications environment with the expectation that they would lead to a decline in real, trusted dialog. The aim of this study is to show the crucial roles of LLMs in promoting responsible virtual communications in the media space. The paper discusses how generative AI can support the development of digital hygiene and responsible virtual communication space.
