The Role of Artificial Intelligence in AI-Driven Media in Nigeria: A Scopic Analysis

Abstract

This paper looks at AI-driven media in Nigeria with a focus on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The specific objectives are to: show the relevance of AI towards realizing the functions that it can play within the media in Nigeria; identify the challenges of utilizing AI for media purposes like gathering of news, reporting, gate-keeping, editing and related development in Nigeria and proffer solutions on how to improve AI-driven roles in media in general in Nigeria. The theory of technological determinism was utilized as framework for analysis. The documentary method using secondary sources were adopted to gather and collect data, while the qualitative method was used to for analysis. This paper delves on effective utilization of AI in facilitating various media roles and development in Nigeria. Also, the study indicates AI-driven media to be a catalyst for the promotion of good journalism, news gathering, reporting, gate-keeping and news dissemination in Nigeria, etc. In addition, the paper observes that high cost of AI services, inadequate infrastructure, issues of power supply, poor AI literacy, etc, and other issues are factors that pose challenge to AI-driven media in Nigeria. Therefore, the paper suggests the importance of the provision of infrastructure and adequate resources for spreading AI-driven media and the development of adequate implementation in Nigeria.
