Development of Informative Comics: Towards the Promotion of Organic Agriculture in the Province of Bulacan, Philippines

Abstract

The current study explores the potential of comics in information dissemination of organic agriculture (OA) in the province of Bulacan. It identifies the attitude, knowledge and practice of the farmers and the scientist farmers in their organic use of enhancing their farm. With the use of comics, the public is encouraged to utilize organic fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides like vermicomposting, green manuring, mulching, concoction and others. This study applies descriptive analysis on the interviews gathered from top-down (actor from the structure or government agency) and bottom-up (actor from the agency or expert farmers). Meanwhile, in the development of the comics, the study utilizes the Word-Picture Combination of McCloud (2006) that connects the art of drawing to the art of literature. The study concludes that a. health is the main reason in using and subscribing to organic farming, b. an enriched farming land is the primary requirement of OA, which also produces good harvest, c. harvested goods which were planted using artificial/synthetic fertilizer are loose, soft and easy-to-decompose, and d. wastes and trash from house kitchen and backyard are essential in OA. In the end, an informative comic is an output of the study.
