Abstract
This paper adopts rhetorical methods (specifically narrative analysis) to examine narratives about artificial intelligence produced by and circulated within multiple stakeholder discursive communities, including the technology industry, media, government, and academia. The analysis identifies key similarities and differences in dominant narratives about the creation, purpose, and future of artificial intelligence. At the heart of the analysis is the question: How do different stakeholders tell the story of artificial intelligence, particularly of its creation? The purpose of the analysis is to determine whether consistent and divergent narrative themes underlie and explain current debates on regulating artificial intelligence. A secondary goal of the paper is to trace the emerging social imaginary in which technological developments, proselytization and demonization, and consequent legal regulation of artificial intelligence might proceed.
