Having a Dialogue with Texts: Leveraging Chatbots for Close Reading and Analysis

Abstract

This interactive workshop will demonstrate how large language models like ChatGPT can be utilized for close reading, summarizing, and analyzing lengthy and complex texts. Participants will learn techniques for effectively feeding texts into chatbots, guiding the dialogue through targeted questioning, and leveraging the chatbot’s output to enhance comprehension and learning. We will cover best practices for selecting high-quality source texts, crafting lucid prompts, navigating the dialogue, and applying chatbot summaries and analysis. Participants will have the opportunity to try out these techniques with real texts in small groups. Our goal is for attendees to leave with practical strategies for using chatbots as aids in wrestling with academic literature, news articles, policy briefs, and other complex texts.
