Framing Place: Urban Geography in Kleber Mendonça's Cinema

Abstract

This paper discusses, from the fields of geography and film, the concept of place as a spatio-temporal experience. The place experience emerges from the encounter of the human body and its senses with the world, producing affections, poetic images and spatial imaginations that bring with them political implications related to the way we see and represent the world. Given that human existence takes place in geographical space, any urbanscape gives a number of possibilities for the experience of place. ‘Place’ is established in the moment the person encounters the world and in the moment affections occur. Within this context an analysis of the representation of the Brazilian city of Recife by filmmaker Kleber Mendonça Filho is presented.
