Political Hegemony in the Age of the ICTs

Abstract

The increasing growth of technology, information, and communication technology, and the undeniable role of Internet-based media in the daily life of people has caused a change in the content of ideas and theories formed in the past eras based on mass media and past conditions. Since political systems, their authority, and their ascendancy have never been limited to a particular institution, or a particular medium, this research addresses the issue of political hegemony in the age of the ICTs and social media. When politics interfere with the Internet, it creates new forms of antagonism between eDomination and eParticipation. Hence this study addresses the new aspects of domination that are affected by the use of new technological internet tools and focused on the utilization of authoritarian governments from these new aspects to maintain power. Accordingly, on this, this research provides the taxonomy and investigates the role of digital surveillance, and panopticism, in facilitating and advancing the goals of totalitarian governments in controlling, manipulating, and exerting influence on society.
